LandeScapes Land= ground, earth, country, lead one to, bring one to… Escape = break free, make a getaway, slip away, avoid capture… Scape= trail, track, train, contrain, stem… In my exhibition LandeScapes in Gallery Zero I’m showing works inspired by a feeling where the land is escaping under ones feet. In these works I’m telling a story of everyday life and at the same time trying to catch the unknown. The work negotiates between the rational and irrational mind. As a result, a drawing is a kind of a portrait of a process. The drawings in the show are neither of the inside nor the outside but the space between them. The Finnish word “Tila” can be translated into English as “ room”, “ place”, “space” or “state of mind”, and that ambiguity I find both fascinating and true. That kind of ambiguity can be many times the beginning of the work, the reason and the motivation. Many times I travel in-between abstraction and figurativeness. Figurative elements, such as human figures, express a certain feeling or an atmosphere rather than tell a story of a specific person. I approach my work through the material element- grayons, pencil, colour pencil, water colour and varnish. The background of the work, the wooden surface that I often leave visible is also essential and forms a figurative element in the work. Often my works are like puzzles, where different elements come together and communicate. When it comes to my art, I’m not interested in finding or creating a certain style. Instead I think it’s important to continually learn new methods and to question oneself about what one is doing and why. Minna Mäkelä |
